We went to see Man of La Mancha last night, the final big production of the Toledo Rep’s 91st season (a smaller play, Red Speedo, in conjunction with Actors’ Collaborative Toledo, runs in a couple weeks). It was a triumph. The place was packed, leads Eric Hillenbrand and Sarah Dusseau were absolutely on fire, and the musical numbers were some of the best I’ve seen and heard on a regional stage.
This was our first year as season ticket holders at the Rep, and even though I dabbled in community theater years ago, going to half a dozen shows in a season made me feel like the people I used to see at their first-ever comedy club outing. It’s like, you knew this was a thing that existed, but seeing it in action is like peeling back the floorboards of your town and seeing a tiny underground city humming along. Like, “y’all have just been doing this the whole time?”
